Course Description
This course introduces key concepts and state-of-the-art engineering principles for interactive systems with a specific focus on biosignal-aware adaptive systems leveraging AI and wearables. The course explores the interplay of human activities, sensors, and biosignals with wearable technologies, and discusses how artificial intelligence can be applied across the pipeline from sensing to modeling to interaction. Generative AI application is introduced as a complementary means for interface ideation and adaptation.
The course is complemented with an engineering capstone project, where students work in teams on real-world use cases to realize a prototypical biosignal-aware adaptive system using state-of-the-art wearable technologies, Python-based processing, and contemporary UI technologies. The capstone project will be carried out in cooperation with Visualvest, a fintech subsidiary of the Union Investment Group. Students will leverage AI and wearables to design emotion-adaptive investment banking app prototype.
Learning Objectives
- Describe key elements and outcomes of interactive systems as well as key activities and techniques of the human-centered design process for engineering interactive systems
- Articulate key concepts of biosignal-based adaptive systems as an emerging class of interactive systems
- Explore key concepts of wearable technologies as well as integrated sensor technologies for collecting biosignals capturing human activities
- Understand key activities required for biosignal processing, modeling, and consumption by leveraging artificial intelligence & data science methods
- Collect hands-on experience in a capstone project and deliver a prototypical solution for a real-world biosignal-based adaptive system using wearable technologies and AI in a team effort
